Going Home

There are several steps that take place to get your Greyhound to be a loving part of your family. After you have filled out your application, a home visit and have been approved by our review board, the time starts to find you your hound.

We start by calling one of our many track contacts (from Florida to Massachusetts) to locate a dog that fits your profile and your needs. When we locate he/she, the dog gets ready to make his long journey to our group and eventually into your home.

Members of our group patiently wait at the Maryland House, in the wee hours of the morning, to welcome our new arrivals. The large truck pulls up and when the dogs spot us, you hear barking and the sight of muzzles being pressed against the window screens from the crates they have been in for so long. It's really a sight to see. We anxiously await our hounds to be unloaded from the truck. When they finally are off the truck, they are so excited. Tails wagging uncontrollably, muzzles being pressed up against your legs, and hounds jumping and licking as if to say, "I'm Here! I'm here!"

We walk them around for about a half an hour and after trying to chase several cars and trucks, they start to settle down and relax a bit. We load them into our trucks for the 45-minute drive home. While in the trucks, you can be sure to still get bumps from the muzzles and lots of licks and kisses.

Upon arriving at the groomers, the dogs are bathed, checked for fleas and ticks; their nails are clipped, and get just an overall look-over for cuts and scraps. They will be taken to our veterinarian hospital to be neutered or spayed, receive all of their shots, and to get a complete checkover by the doctor. The new families will be called and given an update of their hounds' progress after surgery, and as to when they can pick them up.

A week or so after the dog has been in their new home; we call to see how everything is going. We are happy when we hear that all is well and the families start telling us funny stories about what he/she has done.

It gives us such a warm feeling inside to know that we have successfully placed one more greyhound into a loving home - for them to run and play, to sleep and relax, and to be loved and cared for until their final days.
